It was a dream vacation, that turned nightmare when 38 year old, Rebecca excepted the offer of a Security Guard to escort her to her hotel.  Along the way she was brutally raped and beaten unconscious and left for dead…...##

It happened in Mexico…

NO means NO, Even in Spanish

Hello, My name is Rebecca and on May 9, 2007, while on a dream vacation to Cancun, Mexico, I became a victim of a brutal rape and assault, that nearly ended my life.  My attacker was a Security Guard, who had offered to walk me next door to my hotel “for my safety”.

There was a witness to my attack, who stated to police that he had watched as,

“He transformed to a beast and tried to kill her”

and

”She is NOT the FIRST victim, only the first to go to the police”.

After hearing of this statement, months after my attack, I unwittingly thought that the police in Cancun would simply arrest these men and they would be punished for their crimes.  Yet, over a year later, there still hasn't been any arrests in my case.

The police in Cancun,  know who the perpetrators are, know where they are, have a full confession from one of the perpetrators, eye-witness statements, medical records, photos taken of me only hours after the attack and  an arrest warrant signed by a Judge in July of 2007.   Yet, they can only tell me that “we are working on your case and these things take time”.

So I began to search for other victims of rape and violent crime in Mexico, to ask advice from ones who have lived this nightmare before me, and to hopefully find someone who can help.

Yet, what I have found has truly shocked me even more than my own experience.

I have found other victims, like me, who were raped by people that were in a position to protect them and when they tried to report these crimes, they were not only discouraged from going to the police, but they were quickly placed on a flight out of Mexico and simply sent home.

I have also found that many of the travel brochures are misleading about what is really going on south of the border and we the traveler are not being given accurate information so that we can make an informed decision about our own safety while traveling throughout Mexico.

Therefore, I am developing this site to give a voice to all victims of rape and violent crime while on vacation to Mexico.  A place to share their stories and to warn others of the crimes taking place in this so called paradise.  Crimes that are constantly being pushed under the rug and hidden from view.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of rape or violent crime while vacationing south of the border, please feel free to contact me and share your story.  If by sharing our stories, we can save just one person from becoming a victim, that is all we can hope for.

Thank you,

Rebecca in North Carolina
